Here are 3 more ways you can avoid being sinful...
#4 Be Thankful for the Thorns
“And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou
persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.” Acts 9:5
When Jesus confronted Saul of Tarsus (Paul) on the road to Damascus, Christ told him that God had put
painful pricks in his path to try to show him the error of his way. Sometimes trials test your perseverance
in the right thing. But when the way seems rough, stop and consider whether God might be trying to redirect
you.
Proverbs speaks of a hedge of thorns. If you are walking in the right way, it will be a beautiful wall for
shade and protection. But if you try to get out of the right way to follow after sin, the thorns will
pierce you. Be thankful for the thorns which help you avoid sin. And if you feel the thorns, repent of that
rebellious spirit which desires what is forbidden, and get back in the middle of the path.
#3 Be Honest When You Fall
“I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will
confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.” Psalm 32:5
The psalmist warns us that hidden sin will eat us from the inside out. Instead, admit when you have sinned.
Say the same thing about it that God does (the root of the word confession means to say the same thing).
And repent of your sin.
Because of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice for us, God is both faithful and just to forgive us when we confess our
sin. You are free to confess because you have a Savior. Glorify Him by admitting your sin, and turning from
it to Him.
#2 Confess to another Person
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.” James 5:16
This might be the hardest way to avoid sin, but it is one of the most effective. Confessing to God is
comparatively easy since He already knows. Confessing to another person is painful for our pride. Find
someone who knows the Bible and loves God enough that they will not minimize your sin, and tell them what
you have done or what you are struggling with, and ask them to help you. Then be honest with them. You will
find that knowing you will have to tell someone if you sin is a huge deterrent when nothing else will stop
you.
