Today's Bible Verse
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content."
1 Timothy 6:6-8 King James Version (KJV)

Today's Bible Study
Both of my parents were born in 1930 in a tiny, rural community in the Ozarks. I resist saying my parents’ families were dirt poor, but they probably were. Their basic needs were met, but just barely.

Many families in the 1930s enjoyed no excesses. They had enough money to get by, enough food not to go hungry and enough clothes to keep them from freezing in the winter. My grandparents had passable roads, a church and a one-roomed school.

Many of my daily problems are caused by excesses I “enjoy.”

I weigh too much (excess of food). I don’t work hard physically, so my body is not strong and lean (excess of conveniences). I while away whole days and feel sluggish and unproductive (excess of time).

Many of society’s problems are worse today because people have too much.

We waste food and water because we have never been desperate for either. We don’t appreciate having money because we have never had to choose between having food or having firewood. We have bulging closets because new clothes come easily.

Enjoy the fruit of your labors, but don’t develop an entitlement complex. Many of the freedoms, opportunities, and comforts you enjoy came at someone else’s expense. Live a circumspect life. To gain perspective on this topic, read Ephesians 4:1-7.
Today's Prayer
Lord, please don’t let me become complacent about my blessings. I did nothing to earn most of them. The greatest blessing I possess came at the cost of Your only Son. Thank You for that unspeakable gift. In His Name, Amen.

Yesterday's Bible Verse
"The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage."

In her book The Quarry, Mildred Walker wrote this: A kind of wonder fills us at the way things turn out. Such a little part of your life you spend making decisions and doing things, and the rest of your life you spend remembering the first part.

I am no longer a young woman. My children are adults and I have four beautiful grandchildren. I do some part-time writing. I read books and I grow geraniums in the spring and summer. I spend time with my husband of 45 years.

And I spend much of my time remembering.

David wrote in Psalm 16:6 the words of today’s verse. Another version translates it this way: The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.

We know David had neither a perfect nor a trouble-free existence. For years he ran for his life from jealous King Saul. His immoral relationship with Bathsheba, another man’s wife, brought tragedies on his family. One of his sons killed his half-brother and even tried to weasel the throne away from his father. David was not the perfect parent.

Yet Acts 13:22 tells us God’s opinion of his servant David: I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will. I am thankful God remembers that we (David, you and I) are dust, and He loves us anyway.

I encourage you to read David’s beautiful words recorded in Psalm 103:7-19, which detail God’s loving care for those of us who fear Him. He causes the boundary lines for us to fall in pleasant places too.
Yesterday's Prayer
Lord, my heart overflows with gratitude for the numberless blessings You have poured out upon me. Thank You for loving this imperfect servant. In Jesus Name, Amen.
