Today's Bible Verse
"For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it."
1 Peter 3:10-11 King James Version (KJV)

Today's Bible Study
Years ago, before my husband pulled the garbage can to the end of the driveway for pick up, our kids removed the can’s lid and inspected its contents.

There then ensued a conversation between them and me that went something like this:

“Mom! You’re throwing away these tennis shoes?!”

“Yes, I am.”

“But these are my favorites! They’re the ones I wore to the amusement park and spilled the snow cone on.”

“They’re trash. Put them back into the garbage can.”

What is wrong with my kids? I wondered. We give them everything they need and then some, so why do they want to keep useless trash?

I suspect God wonders the same things about His children when we hang on to trash in the form of greed, selfishness, envy and other sins.

God says, “Those things are trash. I have given you everything you need and more. Seek the good in life: peace, love and faithfulness. Be quick to get rid of any unholy thing.”
Today's Prayer
God, I confess I often choose worldly trash over your treasures. I am sorry. Forgive me and lead me toward what is good. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Yesterday's Bible Verse
"But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content."
1 Timothy 6:6-8 King James Version (KJV)

Yesterday's Bible Study
Both of my parents were born in 1930 in a tiny, rural community in the Ozarks. I resist saying my parents’ families were dirt poor, but they probably were. Their basic needs were met, but just barely.

Many families in the 1930s enjoyed no excesses. They had enough money to get by, enough food not to go hungry and enough clothes to keep them from freezing in the winter. My grandparents had passable roads, a church and a one-roomed school.

Many of my daily problems are caused by excesses I “enjoy.”

I weigh too much (excess of food). I don’t work hard physically, so my body is not strong and lean (excess of conveniences). I while away whole days and feel sluggish and unproductive (excess of time).

Many of society’s problems are worse today because people have too much.

We waste food and water because we have never been desperate for either. We don’t appreciate having money because we have never had to choose between having food or having firewood. We have bulging closets because new clothes come easily.

Enjoy the fruit of your labors, but don’t develop an entitlement complex. Many of the freedoms, opportunities, and comforts you enjoy came at someone else’s expense. Live a circumspect life. To gain perspective on this topic, read Ephesians 4:1-7.
Yesterday's Prayer
Lord, please don’t let me become complacent about my blessings. I did nothing to earn most of them. The greatest blessing I possess came at the cost of Your only Son. Thank You for that unspeakable gift. In His Name, Amen.
