My mother raised four children according to the instructions in her Bible. She converted her husband and had a godly influence on all her family members and many friends.
All mothers, and many grandmothers, leave a heritage to their children. I am fortunate that the heritage passed along to me was a godly one. Timothy had the same good fortune.
I am certain Timothy’s mother and grandmother were busy women. But they were not too busy to instill “unfeigned faith” in Timothy.
Women today have a potential distraction that Timothy’s mother and grandmother did not have. We are immediately available to others through emails, text messages, blog posts, Facebook timelines, tweets, and more.
Messages presented electronically seem somehow urgent. Cell phones ring and jingle, ding and vibrate, making themselves hard to ignore. I have even caught myself stopping mid-prayer to read a text.
These new modes of communication can consume a mother’s time to the point that she neglects the most important reading any of us can do.
We may indeed live in the Communication Age, but we must never neglect reading the Holy Message communicated to us by God.

| Father, we thank you for the gift of speech and the gift of written words. But sometimes we become addicted to our phones. We allow them to dominate our lives. We ignore our children and other people who want to have personal and meaningful conversations with us. Forgive us for being more eager to hear and read what other people have to say than we are to read your Message. I pray through Your Son Jesus. Amen.
