me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore
have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I
shall not be ashamed."

Does the phrase about “setting
one’s face” remind you of a passage in the New
Testament?
Upon reading this verse, I thought instantly of the
words of Jesus recorded in Luke 9:51: And it
came
to pass, when the time was come that he [Jesus]
should be received up, he stedfastly set his
face
to go to Jerusalem.
Jesus’ one purpose on this earth was to do the will
of His Father. He knew what lay ahead of him in
Jerusalem, and He was determined to complete His
mission.
In today’s verse, the prophet Isaiah had a hard
message to deliver to Judah. Through him, God was
calling His people to return to a relationship with
Him. Isaiah relied upon God to help him complete
his mission.
Athletes hoping to qualify for the Olympics,
students vying for a place in a prestigious school,
and businesspeople working to earn a promotion “set
their faces” toward attaining their goals.
Have you set your face to complete the mission God
assigned to you? If you have, keep your eyes on
that finish line. Don’t lean toward anything that
will hinder you.
My grandfather plowed his garden each spring with a
push plow. As he started to “lay” each row, Grandpa
fixed his eyes on an object directly in front of
him at the other end of the garden. If he kept his
eye on that object (a tree or a fence post), he
plowed a straight line.
Don’t let anything deter you as you move toward
completing your assigned mission.

Yesterday's Bible
Study |
In the first eleven
chapters of the book of Romans, Paul outlines
what has happened at the cross. He explains
that we are now one body, both Jew and Gentile,
and he declares the wonders of being in Christ.
From chapter twelve onward he teaches us how to
live in relation to the Good News of Jesus.
Today’s verse sits right in the middle of other
verses that admonish us to show mercy with
cheerfulness, abhor that which is evil and
cleave to that which is good, provide things
honest in the sight of all men, and, in Romans
12:18, “If it be possible, as much as lieth in
you, live peaceably with all men.”
Verse 18 covers a lot of territory. If we
desire to live peaceably, we must lose the “I”
doctrine that is prevalent today.
Daily we hear statements beginning with the
words I deserve, and I have the
right.
How successful would Jesus’ ministry have been
if he had practiced the “I” doctrine?
Nowhere in the Gospels does Jesus say:
“I deserve better treatment.”
“I have the right to strike back.”
“I deserve some appreciation.”
At the very worst point in his life, Jesus
said, “Father, forgive them; for they know not
what they do.”
Let’s rejoice in the sure hope we have of
resurrection; be patient when we experience
troubles, knowing that God is in control; and
be always in the mindset of prayer.
