Being tempted is not sin. Sin
occurs when, after I am tempted, I allow that
temptation to become an action. The best way to
conquer temptation is to squelch it quickly.
Eve failed to do this in the Garden when the
serpent tempted her to eat of the forbidden fruit.
(See Genesis 3).
She confessed that God had put a restriction on
what she could eat. She said:
We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the
garden:
but of the fruit of the tree which is in the
midst
of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat
of
it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
(Genesis 3:3)
She was off to a good start. But then, she
considered the fruit. She saw that it was good for
food and pleasant to the eye, a tree to be desired
to make one wise.
In other words, she subjected God’s command to her
own powers of reasoning.
Based upon her observation and evaluation,
there
was no reason why she and her husband should not
eat the fruit.
Do you trust that God knows more about you and your
world than you do? Do you trust that God sets
limits for reasons you may or may not understand?
Have you pledged to live your life according to the
teachings of the Bible?
If you answered yes to those questions, don’t
presume to second-guess God. Endure temptations,
but don’t succumb to them. Keep pushing forward to
receive the crown of life, which the Lord promises
to those who love Him.

Reading the history of the
Israelites in the Old Testament is like
watching a tennis match. Like the ball flying
back and forth, Israel fluctuated between
obedience and disobedience to their God.
This was their normal pattern. The Israelites
were faithful to God for a time, and God
blessed them. Then they pulled away from God,
often even worshiped idols, and God withdrew
His blessings. The people then cried out to God
for rescue and God relented, received Israel
back with open arms, and they were again
faithful to Him for a time.
Indecision is a crippler. Some days I
accomplish next to nothing because I can’t
decide if I want to sit at my computer and
write or go outside and work with my flowers.
The minute I decide upon one activity, the
other activity lures me toward it. At the end
of the day, I haven’t succeeded at either
effort because I was double-minded.
In today’s Bible verse, God is using Isaiah to
woo Israel back to Him. God reminds them of the
many blessings enjoyed by those who walk
stedfastly with the Lord. He promises to
protect them from oppression and free them from
living in fear.
The heritage of God’s people is one of peace
for them and their children.
I am reminded of Jesus lamenting over the city
of Jerusalem in Matthew 23:37. He said, “How
often would I have gathered thy children
together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens
under her wings, but ye would not!”
How necessary it is for us as God’s people to
remain faithful to Him who has called us.

Lord, help me be single-minded in my devotion to You today. Don’t let indecision cripple me. Show me the way to go and be with me as I follow. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
