"There shall not any man be
able to stand before thee all the days of thy life:
as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will
not fail thee, nor forsake thee."

Moses had died, and the
Israelites were nearing the end of their period of
mourning for him. God selected Joshua to succeed
Moses as the Hebrews’ leader.
I would have been hesitant to take on leadership of
this mass of grumbling travelers. They had tested
Moses’ patience many times. They had even tested
God’s patience.
Maybe that is why three times in the first chapter
of Joshua, God admonished Joshua to be strong and
courageous (verses 6, 7, 9).
In addition to His exhortation to Joshua to be
strong and courageous, God commanded him to keep
the law that had been given to Moses. Turn not
from
it to the right hand or to the left (Joshua
1:7).
Thirdly, God commanded, This book of the law
shall
not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou
mayest
observe to do according to all that is written
therein: for then thou shalt make thy way
prosperous, and then thou shalt have good
success
(Joshua 1:8).
These were appropriate instructions to be given to
a new leader. How blessed we would be if today’s
leaders were strong and courageous; if they kept
God’s law; and if they meditated day and night on
the words of the Bible.
Each of us is a leader in some capacity. Whether we
are parents, teachers, supervisors at work, or
overseers of a county or district, we are to lead
by word and example. As Christians in a leadership
position, God will guide us and lead us to success
if we allow Him to do so.

Being tempted is not sin.
Sin occurs when, after I am tempted, I allow
that temptation to become an action. The best
way to conquer temptation is to squelch it
quickly.
Eve failed to do this in the Garden when the
serpent tempted her to eat of the forbidden
fruit. (See Genesis 3).
She confessed that God had put a restriction on
what she could eat. She said:
We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the
garden: but of the fruit of the tree which is
in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye
shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it,
lest ye die. (Genesis 3:3)
She was off to a good start. But then, she
considered the fruit. She saw that it was good
for food and pleasant to the eye, a tree to be
desired to make one wise.
In other words, she subjected God’s command to
her own powers of reasoning.
Based upon her observation and evaluation,
there was no reason why she and her husband
should not eat the fruit.
Do you trust that God knows more about you and
your world than you do? Do you trust that God
sets limits for reasons you may or may not
understand? Have you pledged to live your life
according to the teachings of the Bible?
If you answered yes to those questions, don’t
presume to second-guess God. Endure
temptations, but don’t succumb to them. Keep
pushing forward to receive the crown of life,
which the Lord promises to those who love Him.
