Today's Bible Verse |
"But continue thou in the
things which thou hast learned and hast been
assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
and that from a child thou hast known the holy
scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto
salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

Today's Bible Study |
Our son Ryan was about five
years old when he asked me this question: “Mom, do
I stink?”
I leaned over and took a whiff. No, he did not
stink, and I told him so. Apparently, during an
argument with his sister, he had been told he did.
To my small son, I was the authority on every
topic. I owed it to him to be honest, even if
honesty hurt.
If Ryan had to be told he did indeed stink, he
wanted to hear it from me.
Morally speaking, this earth is inhabited by many
stinky people, but most of them never stop to ask
the question Ryan asked me. Some do not know whom
to ask because they have never established an
absolute authority for their lives.
Others trust their consciences to alert them when
they misstep, or they read the newest self-help
book. Most just fall in line with the current moral
code and live according to its dictates.
Timothy’s standard was the Word of God, which was
taught to him by his mother and grandmother (2
Timothy 1:5). Identify the standard by which you
measure your life. Is your standard reliable?
Do you stink? How do you know?

Lord, help me measure myself by Your Word and nothing else. Lead me to repent when I sin. Thank You for loving imperfect people like me. Amen.

This is probably my favorite
start to a Psalm. I picture the psalmist journeying
through the hills in Israel, surrounded by
creation.
Nothing else draws worship from me quite like the
beauty of God’s universe. I recently visited
Alaska, which may be the most awe-inspiring place I
have been. Its area is vast and varied. I wanted to
take photos, but it was hard to isolate one section
of the scene upon which to focus my camera. Beauty
surrounded me.
Or, maybe the most awe-inspiring place I have
visited is the Grand Canyon. I took my Bible one
morning and sat at its rim (not too closely to the
rim) and read from the Psalms. I communed with God
through the colors of the canyon and sky. I
listened to the sounds made by the animals He
created. Did I say Alaska was vast and varied? No
less so is the Grand Canyon.
But I do not need to leave my home to see the
beauty of God’s creation. I gaze into the night sky
and see the numberless stars. I watch the moon
through all its phases. My head is dizzy with the
enormity of God’s sky.
And maybe this is God’s wonder that amazes me most:
The creator of this universe loves me. He protects
me and leads me in His ways. He knows my name.
Hallelujah!

Lord God, Maker of heaven and earth, I thank you for your creation. I thank you for its beauty and splendor. I thank you that you desire a personal relationship with me. Let me never take for granted your glorious power and grace. Amen.
