Second Thessalonians is an epistle (letter) written by Paul to the people of the Greek city of Thessalonica to clarify his earlier teaching. It wasn't uncommon, even in Paul's day, for there to be confusion and false teaching, especially when end times events were concerned.

Paul cared about the people. He offered encouraging words and support for followers of Jesus because he knew being a Christian wasn't easy. Paul and many others had suffered persecution for their faith. It would have been easier to go back to their former way of living than to keep going on the Christian path, knowing that the road would be long and hard.

In 2 Thessalonians 3:13, Paul encourages believers not to become weary in doing the right thing. Something many of us deal with today. As we press on in our faith, we must keep our hearts and minds focused on Jesus, knowing that His grace is sufficient in every situation. Weariness comes when we depend on our own strength, rather than on God.

When times get tough, we mustn't pull back. We remain steadfast in our relationship with God, taking every opportunity to rely on His strength as we live a righteous and holy life. In ourselves, it's impossible. Through Christ, anything is possible.

Afternoon Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for your Word and the encouragement I need to keep pressing on in my relationship with you. Help me not grow weary in serving you. Forgive me for the times when I have depended on my own strength and wisdom to guide me. As I learn to lean on your power, help me keep my eyes focused on you. I'm thankful for the opportunity to serve you with my life. In Jesus' name, amen.

Yesterday Afternoon's Bible study

Many people today have schedules that are so packed there is little or no time left over for rest. Some may think of their busyness as a badge of honor or a sign of how successful they are. But the truth is, running ourselves ragged day after day leads to exhaustion and has the potential to steal our joy.

When we're aware that our days are short, meaning our life on Earth isn't long, it helps us focus on the things that bring true happiness. In the end, all that matters is our relationship with God, and our family and dear friends.

We need God's help to focus on what truly matters. When we feel the seemingly never-ending demands of life, we can ask God to guide us in deciding where our attention should be focused. Only those things that are done for the Lord will last into eternity. Nothing else matters.

Our days are short, so it's vital that we spend our time, talent, and resources on the most important things in life. When we lose our focus, we go to God in prayer. He will provide all the clarity we need to know what's important.

Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer

Dear Lord, please help me fight my way through busyness. When I am overwhelmed by a full schedule, I know that you can help me discern what's important and deserves my attention. Help me view my schedule in light of eternity. Focus my heart and mind on what you want me to do, rather than on everything I think I should do. In Jesus' name, amen.
