In this afternoon's verse, the prophet Jeremiah was imprisoned for delivering God's message to Judea.The Israelites had once again turned away from God. For years, Jeremiah had prophesied that judgment was coming upon the people. The people refused to believe Jeremiah's warnings from God. Instead, they listened to false prophets who were predicting peace. Since Israel was in rebellion toward God, they would not experience peace until they were restored to Him.
At any point, the Israelites could have repented and turned back to God, but until that point they would continue to face the consequences of their sinful actions. We have that same opportunity today. When we call upon the Lord with a repentant heart, He will hear our cry and answer us with love and forgiveness.

In our relationship with God, we should remain in a posture that allows us to hear correction from the Holy Spirit. God doesn't condemn us when we confess our sins, but He will listen to our prayers and give us direction in how we can live according to His will.
Calling on God also puts us in a place where we are willing to listen to Him. This verse says He will show us great and mighty things that we don't know—and because human wisdom is flawed and unreliable, there is a great deal that we don't know. When we seek after God, we will discover His wisdom and perfect plan for our lives.

God, You are the Creator of the universe and the Author of everything that has ever existed. You know everything that has happened throughout time, and you know my future. Thank you for hearing my prayers when I call out to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Yesterday's Afternoon Bible Verse
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
Yesterday's Afternoon Bible Study
As we study God's Word, something glorious happens within us. The Scripture begins to transform us as we take the words to heart and apply them to our actions. The Word of God makes its home inside our minds and dwells within us.
The word "dwell" means to live inside or abide within. We dwell within houses that keep us protected from outside elements and provide a place of safety. We find comfort in our homes as we can be our authentic selves uninhibited.
When we dwell in God's Word, we can find comfort and peace like nothing else in the world. The principle of dwelling in the Scriptures was emphasized to new believers when Paul wrote the letter to the Colossians. He wanted them to beware of false teachers who would try to lead them astray. He wanted these new Christians to understand the benefit of allowing the Word of God to affect their lives. Then, they would share with and encourage each other with the wisdom God had imparted to them.

Singing and worshiping God was also valuable to the early Church, and is still essential today. We are strengthened in unity as we worship God in spirit and in truth.
Charles Spurgeon, who is considered the Prince of Preachers, once said, "Therefore, beloved, be much with your Bibles and let your Bibles be much with you—for your own profit, for the profit of others and for the glory of God! So be it, for Christ's sake! Amen."
As we worship, share, encourage, and admonish each other, God will be glorified, and our lives will be changed.
