Today's Bible Verse

In this verse from Matthew, Jesus sends out His twelve disciples to minister throughout Israel. He tells them to heal the sick, raise the dead, and exorcise demons, which they are able to do because the Lord has given them power. Their actions would reveal the type of kingdom the Lord represents… a kingdom of healing and restoration.

We do not serve a God who is far away, distant from our physical bodies and pain. Much to the contrary, He is active in our lives on a tangible level. We see this through the command that Jesus gave to the disciples. He wanted them to show that He was not indifferent to human suffering, but rather, He cared deeply about people and their spiritual conditions. The physical healing that the disciples offered foreshadowed the spiritual healing that Jesus, who would soon join them, provided. Just as they healed a leper's skin, Jesus could heal a broken soul.

This means we can come to the Lord with boldness and ask for healing. He once commanded His disciples to heal; we know that it is His will to heal.

Whatever is on our hearts, whether it's a physical condition, an emotional wound, or a broken relationship, the Lord can mend with His hands. He has already healed our souls, which were once far away from Him but have now been brought near. Today, if you are in need of healing, ask the Lord to provide it. He is a healer. Even if your healing does not come immediately as you hope, you can trust that He is working all things for the good, and your suffering is not in vain. We have eternal healing promised us, and will forever enjoy a perfect union with God in Heaven.

Today's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for being a God of healing. I thank you for caring for me. Please, Lord, do heal the broken parts of me. Help me to be full in body and soul so I can honor you with my life. In Jesus' name, amen.

In this verse from Psalm 38, David writes about how the Lord sees him even when he is despondent. David knows that the Lord hears and cares about his own groaning, even when he is hurting. Today, we'll talk about how this applies to us when we're struggling with depression.

When we are feeling weighed down by sadness and hurt, it can feel like the Lord is far away from us. The feelings we're experiencing can seem interminable, as if they will never end, and we can lose hope in the Lord and our future. David knew what this felt like—he was literally groaning. He was despondent—but he remembered that the Lord was near him. Indeed, even though David was groaning, he knew that the Lord heard his sorrow.

David knew that his pain was safe with the Lord and that the Lord would answer his cries. We can have the same confidence as he did. Indeed, we need only to look at the cross to know that the Lord knows what pain is like. He knew what it felt like to be falsely accused, physically beaten, and publicly mocked. The Lord stepped into our pain for our own sake, saving us from our own sin. When we were not even able to groan or cry out to Him for help, Jesus went to the cross, thinking about us and the redemption He would give us.

Today, if you are struggling with depression, remember that the Lord knows exactly how you feel. He is no stranger to your pain, and he cares about what you are facing and feeling. Like David, call out to the Lord. Let Him hear your groanings, and ask Him to revive your soul with thoughts of Him and His goodness.

Yesterday's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for being near to me always. Even in times of suffering and pain, I know that you are with me. Thank you for making yourself known to me in every situation. Please mend my soul and help me rest in you today. In Jesus' name, amen.
