Today's Bible VerseWhom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
Add to Favorites Share with FriendIn this morning's Psalm, we have a passionate expression of desire for the Lord. The psalmist says there is none like Him on Heaven or Earth; he desires the Lord above all things. The more we get to know the Lord, the more this verse reflects our sweet relationship with Him. As we grow in our knowledge of Him, we begin to cherish Him on a new level.
Have you experienced what it is like to desire the Lord above all else? This happens when we realize that the Lord is the only one who can meet all of our needs. He knows us completely and is able to satisfy us better than anything in the world can. He is better than a successful career, lots of money, physical health and beauty, or even a loving family and friends. This is because He meets our needs, not only in the present moment, but for all eternity.
Yet… it can be difficult to desire the Lord above all else. He might seem far off or inaccessible, and it's easy to forget how much we rely on Him when so many of our material needs are met each day. The Lord, however, meets us right where we are. If we want to desire Him above all things, we can begin to pray for that, asking the Lord to stir our hearts with longing for Him.
When we begin to know the Lord on a deeper level, we will want to know Him more! Our efforts compound; we will never get tired of Him. Instead, we will want to spend more and more time with Him. This is why mature believers spend so much time in prayer and in the Bible—they want to know the Lord better and better! As A.W. Tozer wrote in The Pursuit of God, "O God, I have tasted Thy goodness, and it has both satisfied me and made me thirsty for more."
This is what the Psalmist thought about when he wrote today's verse. He knew that nothing was better than the Lord. Today, our hearts can begin to resound with this same truth.
Dear Lord, thank you for being better than anything in the entire world. You are perfect, loving, and so good to me. Whet my appetite to know you better. I love you, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.
If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.

Yesterday's Bible VerseBut if from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.:

In this verse from Deuteronomy, Moses speaks to the Israelites. He promises that if they seek the Lord with all their heart and soul, they will find Him. This is a sweet promise and reminder for us today.
Sometimes, the Lord can feel distant. This may be our own doing, or simply the result of circumstances that we experience. In these times, we can take heart that the Lord is never far off. Indeed, if we seek Him, knowing that He promises to be found, we can experience His love and mercy afresh.
This verse is also encouraging to us when we have conversations with people who do not believe in the saving mercy and love of Jesus. When we have conversations with non-Christians, we can take heart that no one who truly wants to know the Lord will be left wanting. If they are committed to seeking Him with all their heart and all their soul, they will find Him. He will make Himself known to all who seek Him in a powerful, indescribable way.
What does it mean to seek the Lord with our hearts and souls? On the surface level, it means that we are committed to doing the work, to investing time and energy in knowing the Lord. The Bible requires a concerted effort to understand, and prayer takes a lot of work.
On a deeper level, it means we are interested in truth—even if it is inconvenient, we want to know God as He actually is, not as we wish He would be.
When people are dedicated to the pursuit of truth, seeking it with their hearts and souls, the Lord will make Himself known.
Today, we can encourage ourselves in the truth that the Lord is knowable. He can (and will) be found by those who are dedicated to knowing Him for all that He is. When we continue to press on with all of our hearts and souls, we, like the Israelites Moses speaks to in Deuteronomy, will find Him.
Dear Lord, thank you for meeting us right where we are. Thank you for aiding us, making yourself known, and for caring about us so deeply. Thank you for your great, everlasting love. In Jesus' name, amen.
