Fact: Humans don't always act right. And we see it all around us: road rage, greed, lust, pride; the list goes on and on. People allow emotions to control their (our) actions and, thus, have to suffer the consequences.

After we come to Christ, we accept His grace and receive a new life. But if we aren't careful, we can slip back into our old way of living. In order to remain close to God, and push away from our old life, our heart's cry should be to become more like Christ.

In Psalm 51, King David tells us about a process that takes place in our hearts. This is part of a prayer, a cry to God, in which he says, "create in me a clean heart." People who create things go through a series of steps, but only God can create something out of nothing. Yet in this Psalm, David is asking God to form a clean heart inside him because it's a process.

David also asks the Lord to "renew a right spirit" within him. Without God working in our lives, we don't always do what is right. We need God to change our hearts to make us more like Him—but not just leave us there. We also need God to continuously renew us and make us right in His sight.

Afternoon Prayer

God, I am incapable of having a clean heart without your help. I don't always act right. I know that sin can't stand in your sight because you are pure and holy. I can't control the desire to sin without your strength in my life. Thank you for showing mercy to me when I fall short of your perfection, and help me to become more like you. In Jesus' name, amen.

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.

What does it mean when something is good?

In the Book of Genesis, we read that God created everything and said His creation was good. Today, we typically define good as a feeling or response to how we are doing.

There are times in our lives that don't feel good. In fact, we experience trials, losses, and disappointments that feel anything BUT good. It's important to remember, however, that God is always good and what He does is always right. We need to allow Him to give us peace and hope in our hearts and minds.

If we trust God with our soul, we should know that in our everyday lives, He is going to take care of us.

Romans 8:28 tells us that "all things work together for good to them that love God," but there's a second part to that verse: "to them who are called according to his purpose."

In the beginning, when God created everything that was good, He created humanity. He has always had a divine plan for us, and that is to know Him. God allows things that we wouldn't consider favorable because He is still working His plan for what He knows will bring good in our lives. Be encouraged… God is always good in everything He does!

Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer

Dear God, there are times when life doesn't feel good—but you are always good. Please encourage my heart when I'm sad or let down by others. Lift my head when the weight of the world is pressing down on me. Give me hope and peace in my heart and mind. Thank you for working everything for good in my life. I choose to serve you, no matter what. In Jesus' name, amen.
