We live in a world of now. From fast food and grocery delivery to one-day shipping, whatever we want whenever we want it is nearing the point of instant accessibility. Before too long, anything we order may be in our hands instantly.

Very few things in life work that way. People wait for decades to find their true love. Having children can be a complicated process for some couples. Moving up the corporate ladder can take years of hard work and determination. The reality is, sometimes we just have to wait.

But waiting isn't something most of us enjoy. It requires patience and hope that our expectations will become reality.

In Isaiah 40, we see the benefit of waiting on the Lord. When we wait on God, it means that we haven't received the answers to our prayers, but we trust in Him. In these times, God doesn't let weariness overtake us. In fact, He renews our strength and helps us to endure when we should faint from exhaustion.

We can soar through life's ups and downs with the Lord's help. Waiting can be tough, but the lessons we learn while trusting in God during the waiting are invaluable.

Afternoon Prayer

God, you know I don't enjoy waiting. I often become anxious and annoyed when I don't have instant answers to life's questions. I desperately need to learn to trust in you. Thank you for renewing my strength when waiting drains it out of me. When I don't feel like I can go on, remind me that Jesus endured even to the point of death. Thank you for the lessons you will teach me while I'm waiting. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is nothing more frustrating than preparing to walk out of the house and then realizing you have lost your keys. You search everywhere, even places that you wouldn't have expected them to be because you're desperate. When you find them you have instant relief!

In Jeremiah, we read about a type of desperation in our relationship with God. Although we don't have assurances that we will find our keys or other items we are looking for in life, when we seek after God, Jeremiah 29:13 says we will find Him. There is a caveat, however; we must seek God with all of our hearts.

When we are desperate to find our keys, we look frantically everywhere. We immediately begin thinking, "What will I do?" "What's going to happen if I don't find them?" "Why did I lose them in the first place?" We think those panicked thoughts because we need to have our keys—it's a necessity.

Imagine if we transferred that level of desperation into our walk with the Lord. What would we do without the Lord? It should cause us to seek God like everything in our lives depends on finding Him, because it does.

When we seek after God with all of our hearts, we find everything we need and will ever need. He will never leave us, and He longs for a relationship with us. Seek God and His ways, and you will always find Him.

Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer

Dear Lord, I want to seek you with all of my heart. I know that the knowledge and wisdom you want to give me isn't always instantly available. There is so much that you reveal to me through your Word and by spending time with you in prayer. Help me prioritize my life to allow for those times when you speak to me. Teach me to listen and wait for your voice. In Jesus' name, amen.
