Today's Bible Verse

I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

This Psalm tells us that as we grow in our relationship with the Lord, we will begin to delight in following what He has told us to do. His law is written on our hearts, and we will happily live it out.

Sometimes the Lord wants us to do difficult tasks… tasks that could label us as outsiders. This might make us feel uncomfortable or afraid, or require a lot more courage than we're used to summoning. However, as we begin to obey His will, we will see that even if He asks us to do things that we do not understand, He is always faithful in honoring our obedience.

This means we can respond to His prompting with an immediate, "Yes, Lord". We know that He will honor obedience, and we do not want to disobey Him. Yes, it can be difficult to find joy in the actual act of obedience but we obey anyway. Obedience is still an act of faith, even if we do it in fear or uncertainty.

Having the Lord's law written on our hearts, as the verse says, helps us obey Him. We learn how to apply His law to our lives by actively studying the Bible. It's important to have a time each day where we sit down and allow the Lord to pour into our hearts. If we don't, we can easily get swept up in the things of this world—and let opportunities for the Lord's law to be affirmed in our hearts pass by. Over time, we can become insensitive to His law if we do not feed it with the Word, so making that a habit is important.

As we grow in our relationship with the Lord through prayer, Bible study, and active obedience, we will delight in His will.

Today's Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank you that your will is so sweet. Sometimes it is hard to follow you, Lord, but is it worth it because nothing compares to communion with you. Nothing compares to knowing that I am living for you. Please help me to live for you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Yesterday's Bible Verse

In this verse, we get a picture of our salvation. The Lord is knocking at our doors, and only when we open up will He come in and fellowship with us.

Salvation begins with the Lord knocking. He is the one who initiates it; salvation is always an act of grace because it comes from God. This is encouraging to us as we spread the Gospel… we know that ultimately conversions are from the Lord, and not the result of our own efforts. This means we do not have to evaluate our effectiveness as ministers of the Gospel based on the number of conversions. That is in the hands of the Lord.

After the Lord knocks, we have the option to open the door. He will not force His way into our hearts. We must be willing to receive Him. There are many reasons why we might not want to open the door to the Lord. The Christian life is costly and sometimes downright painful. It requires sacrificing ourselves for the glory of God and surrendering our own will to His.

However, opening the door is worth it because it opens up the opportunity for fellowship with the Lord. When we look at what the Lord calls us to give up—sins, selfishness, a desire to understand (and control) everything—we get an ever-growing knowledge of His love and mercy. We open ourselves up to the most satisfying, exciting, and meaningful communion that anyone could ever experience.

When we sit down with the Lord, we're giving our entire lives over to the One who breathed the universe into existence. We're talking to God—the God of everything, the most powerful and almighty being that has ever existed. There is no friend like the Lord, and there is no fellowship like the love of Jesus. This is what is open to us when we hear Him knocking.

Yesterday's Prayer

Dear Lord, I thank you for your great goodness to me. I don't deserve it at all, and yet you shower me with mercy upon mercy. Your goodness is beyond anything that I have ever known, and I praise you for knocking at my door and letting me rest in your holiness. In Jesus' name, amen.
