In this morning's Psalm, we get a powerful reflection on the Word of God. The psalmist writes that when his soul is heavy, he knows the Lord's Word will strengthen him. Let's think about what this verse means and how it applies to our lives today.

Have you ever felt like your soul was heavy? Most people do at certain times of their lives, such as when they are suffering from grief or feeling weary and stressed from too many obligations. As Christians, we have a tool to help us strengthen our own souls during those difficult times. That tool is God's Word… and it can help us get through anything that life throws our way.

The Bible is our source of strength every day, including when we're feeling desperate. It is called the living Word for a reason—it serves as a guide for how we live each day. This is one of the reasons why it is so essential for us to remain in the Word. Otherwise, we'll miss out on all the benefits it gives us!

The Word has the power to strengthen us because it points us to the Lord. When we think about who the Lord is, we are automatically strengthened. He is faithful, trustworthy, all-powerful, full of grace, kind, and filled with love for His children. Being in the Word reminds us that we do not have to live life by ourselves or even in our own strength. Rather, we can live resting in God's grace, filled with the strength and joy that He offers us.

If you find your soul heavy on a regular basis, think about how much time you spend in the Word. Ask yourself if you might go deeper in the Bible and develop a greater understanding of it. Develop a habit of turning to Jesus again and again, over and over, until your first response to weariness is to go before Him and ask Him to help you. He will answer you and He will give you strength.

Today's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you so much for the gift of yourself and your Word. Thank you for being so good, for loving us so much, and for caring about your children, even when we're tired and weary. Strengthen us, Jesus, and fill us with your love. In your name, amen.

Today's verse is taken from the Sermon on the Mount, a famous set of Jesus' teachings found in the gospel of Matthew. It comes in a section where Jesus is talking about worry, and it asks a rhetorical question: What effect do our thoughts have on things that are impossible to change? Let's take a look at what Jesus meant by this question and the ramifications His teaching has on our lives today.

Have you ever spent time thinking about your own thoughts? What do you think about? Pause for a moment and consider the thoughts that have crossed your mind in the past hour. How many were about things you can't do anything about? It's easy to get caught up in thoughts of the past or our physical appearance or what may or may not happen tomorrow. Even though we can't do much about these things, we still spend time worrying about them.

Jesus' question in this verse in Matthew reminds us that such thinking is futile. Mulling over unchangeable facts does nothing good for us.

At its root, worrying about unchangeable things—or really, about anything—is an example of unbelief. It puts a burden on us that we do not have to bear. We don't have to worry about anything because God is always faithful and can always be trusted. Even if our worst nightmare comes true, we can rest in the character of God because He never changes. He is good and loving—and nothing will ever change those realities. Because of His unchanging faithfulness, we can exchange worry for faithful belief in Him.

Yesterday's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for being so good and so loving. You are infinitely better than anything this world has to offer. Thank you for being a faithful God. Remind us of your faithfulness when we start to worry, and steer our hearts back to you. In Jesus' name, amen.
