The Ten Commandments have helped shape the morals and values of societies all over the world. As followers of Jesus, we can rely on the commandments to let us know how God wants us to respond to others and how we should interact with Him.

In the Old Testament, we read the account of Moses coming down from Mount Sinai, carrying tablets of stone, with commandments written by the finger of God. The first four commandments address our relationship with God—we are to put Him first, not misuse His name, remember the Sabbath day, and not worship idols.

The remaining six commandments guide us in our relationships, directing us not to murder, steal, covet, give false witness against others… and honor our father and mother.

The way we treat our parents is foundational to all of our other relationships. When children learn to respect their parents' authority, they also learn the importance of respecting other authority figures such as teachers, law enforcement officers, and future employers.

When we respect and honor our parents, we are honoring our Heavenly Father. As our culture has demonstrated a lack of respect toward elders and parents, God has been dishonored and disrespected.

Every day we can choose to honor each other in our relationships and to regard others more than ourselves. When it comes to honoring God, He should be revered above everything and everyone in our world.

Afternoon Prayer

God, I'm so grateful for my family. Help me to show love and respect in my actions toward them. More than anything, I want to honor you in the words I say and in my actions. Please forgive me for the times I have placed anything in front of you. I pray for this world that has dishonored you. God, show us mercy and turn our hearts back to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.

God will not look you over for medals, degrees or diplomas but for scars.

-Elbert Hubbard

The Christian does not think God will love us because we are good, but that God will make us good because He loves us.

Romans 8:31 (KJV)

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? :

Yesterday Afternoon's Bible study

In Romans 8, Paul poses a question that reminds us of God's great love for us: "If God [is] for us, who can be against us?"

God is most certainly for us. He has chosen us to be His children, and nothing can ever separate us from His love. This understanding gives us strength when we face obstacles or trials. It can help us overcome fear and doubt that can leave us feeling helpless.

At times, we have thoughts of hopelessness and defeat. These thoughts may enter our minds, but we don't have to entertain them or allow them to affect us. Instead of feeling like we are swimming upstream against everything that is coming at us, we can trust God and know that He is with us. Obstacles have the potential to help us grow closer to God if we view them as an opportunity and not something that is going to destroy us.

God can use us to remind those who feel overwhelmed by the struggles of life that God is on their side. He is stronger, mightier, and more powerful than anything or anyone we cross paths with.

The apostle Paul had no doubt that this was true. When he wrote the words in Romans 8, it was after he had been tortured, imprisoned, and threatened for preaching the Gospel. Paul believed what he wrote, and it had deep meaning to him.

If we can grasp the greatness of God's never-ending love for us, then we can live a faith-filled life that encourages others never to give up.

Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer

God, help me remember that you are for me. You love me, and nothing can ever separate me from that love. I want to live each day in that truth. Remove the fears and doubts that flood my mind when I feel like the world is against me, and help me remember that you can help me overcome anything. I am your child, and you are my Heavenly Father. Thank you for loving me. In Jesus' name, amen.
