Today's Bible Verse

The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the Lord: but he loveth him that followeth after righteousness.

This Proverb tells us that the Lord sees both the wicked and the righteous, and that He loves those who seek righteousness (meaning high morals and values). In this morning's study, we'll consider what it means to follow "after righteousness" and truly experience the love of the Lord as a result.

Sometimes it seems like people who do sinful things get ahead in life, while I, trying to plug along the moral route, encounter all kinds of difficulty. This is not a feeling based on truth; while evil people may seem to get ahead, their behavior is repugnant to the Lord. He will forgive them if they repent, but they cannot experience His love in the midst of sin.

As Christians following after righteousness, however, we can cling to the supreme treasure that is the love of God. Because the Lord loves us, He will never leave us or forsake us. He will never ignore our cries for help, and He will always offer us peace if we ask Him for it. We know that when we die, we will be with the Lord. Instead of looking for the world to fill us up, we are filled up with His love and goodness. The love of God encourages us and reminds us, over and over again, that we are not alone.

If you see someone doing something that is wrong, or feel as though being a Christian is a burden, remember that the Lord has a different perspective than we do. He will not overlook sin without repentance or forget about our faithfulness in difficult times. When we remember that He loves us because of grace, we will be able to have compassion for other people (just as He has had compassion for us), and focus on His love.



As we make the decision to cling to His faithfulness above all else, we can experience the benefits of His love and mercy. Being righteous will not be a burden, but instead a distinct and holy privilege for those who know the living God.

Today's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for always being faithful to those who try to follow after you. Sometimes it seems like a long and hard road, but obedience to you is always worth it. Help me to always remember the love that you have for me. In Jesus' name, amen.

In this morning's verse, the prophet Isaiah talks about the Lord's care for Jacob, assuring him that he needn't be afraid. This applies to us today as well… the Lord created us, redeemed us, and called us by name, so we have no reason to fear.

We have many reasons to trust God instead of giving in to our fears. Let's think for a minute about God's relationship with us. He created us and knows everything about us, down to the very number of hairs on our heads (Luke 12:7). He cares about us more than we will ever understand and knows us more deeply than we know ourselves. He has also saved us. While we were once separated from God because of sin, Jesus has given us His righteousness, redeeming us forever. Finally, He had called us His own; declaring us His once and for all. Putting everything together, we can say that we are His redeemed creations. Our relationship with God is defined by love, grace, and redemption!

Still… even though we have this relationship with the Lord, it can be easy to let fear take over.

We are bombarded with negative news, and our own fragility comes to light when we have health scares, are hurt by people we love, or face uncertainty in our careers or other plans. However as Christians, we can remember that our hope is not in the world, but in God. Through Him, we are able to overcome the fears that this world instills in us.

When we confront our fears in the world with God's truths, we can overcome fear. When it seems as if the world is falling apart, we can close our eyes and revel in God's love. When it seems like no one cares about us, we can remember that God calls us His children. When we feel unworthy, we can remember that He loves us more than we will ever understand and He is always faithful. Nothing that happens to us in the world can separate us from God. For all these reasons, we can learn to truly "fear not."

Yesterday's Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you so much for calling me by name and considering me yours. Thank you for being my salvation and stronger than any of my fears. I love you, Lord. In Jesus' name, amen.
