Proverbs 22:6 is one of the most well-known Scripture passages on child-rearing. Children are a wonderful gift from God. It is a privilege to raise them to follow His ways. No matter what our role, whether it is parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, or friend, if we have the opportunity to influence a child, we should realize the importance of the things we do and say. As parents, we are always training our kids, even when we aren't doing it intentionally. They learn everything from us … how to talk, walk, what to eat, how to interact with others, and so forth. Children look to adults to demonstrate what their possible future may look like. Our attitudes affect how they treat others and how they respond to God. Without guidance, children are left to form their own judgments about what is right and wrong. Their ideas may be foolish and demonstrate a lack of common sense. Our influence, when guided by the Holy Spirit, can make a lasting impact on their lives.

By instructing them in God's commandments, we are helping them understand that God's Word is the highest authority in our lives … and the way to stay on the right path. When our children make mistakes, we have the opportunity to extend the same grace to them that God has shown to us. We aren't left to train up our children on our own. God can provide all the wisdom and guidance we need to help our children follow after Him.

Afternoon Prayer

Heavenly Father, you set the ultimate example of how to love others when you sent Jesus to us. Give me the strength and wisdom I need to instruct the children whom you have placed in my path. Help me to show grace even as they make mistakes and grow. Use me as a powerful influence in their lives to point them to you. In Jesus' name, amen.

Yesterday Afternoon's Bible study

In Deuteronomy, Moses has led the Israelites across the Jordan River, and they are preparing to enter the Promised Land. He reminds them, as he had many times before, that God has taken care of them. God rescued the Israelites from Egypt and provided for them in the wilderness. He made a covenant with them at Mount Sinai and gave the people His law. Now, Moses tells them again about the characteristics of God—He is like none other. He is indivisible. He is the one true God. There were multiple times when the Israelites turned away from God and chose to worship other gods. But Moses tells them that they are to love God and only Him. Nothing is out of His sight.

We can learn from the Israelites. As we reflect on our salvation, it's important to remember that we should be devoted to God with our whole lives. He sees every part of our life and deserves all of our love from our hearts. God can use us to lead others like He used Moses to lead the people of Israel. God gave him the strength to deliver His Word, even when the people didn't want to hear it. We should seek God's guidance every day, so we remain close to Him for all the days of our lives.

Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer

Dear Lord, I recognize that you are the one true God. Thank you for being with me and guiding me with your loving hand. Even in the times I have strayed, you are still merciful to me. I love you today, and I desire to remain faithful all the days of my life. In Jesus' name, amen.
