Afternoon Bible Verse

And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

In 1 Samuel 30, King David has been informed that he cannot go and fight with the Philistine army against the Israelites. David had made a tremendous error—he had gone to King Achish with some of his men and pretended to be on the Philistines' side. God had mercy on David and did not allow him to fight against the people that God would one day call him to lead. While David was gone, the Amalekites had raided his base camp and taken everything, including children, women, and all David's possessions. David's men were discouraged and frustrated, and threatened to kill him. This afternoon's verse shows us that David had hit rock bottom … but he encouraged himself in the Lord.

There are times in life when we've made bad decisions that affect us and those around us. It can be especially discouraging when we let others down. The only hope we have is in the Lord. We can choose to live in self-pity, or we can turn to the Lord. King David decided on the latter. God has always been faithful and He will continue to show His grace if we go to Him with all of our needs.

Afternoon Prayer

God, help me remember that you will never leave me or forsake me. Even when I make bad decisions and have to suffer the consequences, I pray that you would show mercy to me. Help me always run to you to ease my burdens and encourage me. In Jesus' name, amen.

Exodus 15 is also known as the Song of Moses. This passage of Scripture encourages us to rely on God's strength. Although our strength may fail, God's strength never will. Whether we have big or small problems, God is our salvation from all of them. There are a couple of key points in this verse. First, Moses says, "He is my God." Moses makes it clear that he has decided to serve God; he was all in. Then Moses states, "I will prepare him an habitation," which means he will praise God. As followers of Jesus, we find the real meaning in life when we choose to worship our Creator.

Our culture worships sports figures, musicians, actors, and those who accumulate wealth. We often place them on a pedestal because they have accomplished feats that we haven't. Yet the only One who has ever or will ever be worthy of worship and praise is God. After everything Moses had been through, his praise was well-founded. Because God had rescued His people, and He had saved them from slavery, God was their salvation and worthy of their worship. God has rescued us from being eternally separated from Him. We can worship God today, for He alone is God.

Yesterday Afternoon's Prayer

Heavenly Father, you are the God of Moses and you are my God. I praise you and love you with all of my being. You have provided salvation and given me the strength to live for you. Please lift my burdens and help me to trust you with everything, always. In Jesus' name, amen.
